Padi Courses for 2007:
Nitrox Certification
This is a one-day course with approximately 3-4 hours of self study book time, An instructional video, and an exam and review of the information with an instructor.
Why Nitrox?
When divers are underwater, they must breath air (or some other gas) that has been compressed to allow themseves to inflate
their lungs against the pressure of the surrounding water. Air is a mixture of 79 percent nitrogen and 21 percent oxygen.
At depth, nitrogen, which is chemically inert, is asorbed through the lungs where it passes into the bloodstream.
Blood transports the nitrogen throught the body to tissues. The longer a diver stays underwater and the deeper he dives,
the more nitrogen he absorbs.
It takes time for nitrogen to be absorbed and it takes time for it to be released. Divers today use dive tables and dive computers
to calculate their bottom time and determine how slowly they have to ascend back to the surface. Divers still asorb nitrogen
while diving with nitrox, but because their is less nitrogen in the gas mixture, their bottom time can be extended beyond
that which is allowable with ordinary air.
Many Scuba divers also state they feel more refreshed after diving because they are asorbing less nitrogen.
